Taco Pie!

Hmmm, well it already seems that I am struggling to keep my New Year’s resolution.  I know I promised to blog more, but I just haven’t given myself time to sit down and write these darn posts! I would like to point out that the lack of posts is not due to a lack of cooking. I have a ton of backlogged ideas that I would love to share.

This particular post is a homage to my high school  years.  I had the fortunate opportunity to go to school right beside the Calgary Farmers’ Market. Everyday students from my high school swarmed the old army barracks in hopes of finding something delicious for lunch.  My noon-time favourite was a taco pie from the fabulous pie shop Simple Simon Pies.

While surfing around my usual food blogs, I came across a recipe for Cheeseburger Pie at I’m Losing it Here, a blog I’ve featured more than once here on the site. After reading the post, I was thoroughly inspired to recreate my high school favourite.

Surfing around the Internet resulted in find a few lackluster recipes which left something desired. I decided to wing it and make my own recipe.  In the end, it turned absolutely delicious!  I’m really proud that my first real “wing-it” recipe turned out the way it did.  While its not particularly fancy, taco pie makes for a great comfort food meal. All in all, I will definitely make this recipe again as it’s easy, relatively cheap, and fast.

Recipe Below

  • 500 g Ground Beef
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 Packet Taco Seasoning
  • 1/2 Cup + 3 T Salsa
  • 1/2 Cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 Prepared pie crust
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 and bake the empty pie shell for 15 minutes, until golden and fluffy.
  2. Remove from oven and let sit for 5 minutes
  3. While crust is baking, brown onions and ground beef until cooked
  4. Add taco seasoning and 3 T salsa to beef mixture and mix until combined
  5. Fill crust with beef/salsa mixture
  6. Cover filled pie with a layer of sour cream
  7. Repeat with salsa
  8. Sprinkle grated cheese over the pie and bake for 15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbling.
